Train Wreck

On May 30, 1926, the Denver and Rio Grande # 2 train left Malta crowded with passengers returning to schools and homes. On a curve near the Twin Lake cutoff, the locomotive and several cars jumped the track, plunging into the Arkansas River. Rescuers rushed from Leadville, Buena Vista and Salida. Some of the passengers were killed and many were injured. They screamed in pain as the rescuers transported them from the wreck.

Later, the Rio Grande eliminating the curve.
